GIS LAB INSTRUCTIONS, April 6, 2010
1. Click Day 8 April 6 ... folder.
2. Click GIS for Beginners folder.
3. Click Tools folder.
4. Click ArcEx1_1.exe to install the FREE GIS SOFTWARE. CLICK Next or, YES.. until you finish.
5. Click to install other softwares in the Tools folder if your computer does not have them: the Acrobat Reader, and the Active Flash and Internet. Usually this is not needed.
6. Come out of Tools folder.
7. Click Htmlpages folder.
8. Click home.htm file.
9. You will see the “Gis for Begineers” title page. And a yellow bar at the top asking you to right click to allow ActiveX controls to function. Right click and allow access to Blocked Content.
10. Click Introductory Concept hypertext to enter into this page.
11. You will see a pdf format with “Gis for Beginners” title page. This is FULL PDF VERSION OF THE BOOK.
12. Click on the Instructor Sets hypertext to go into presentation mode of different chapters.
13. You will see Thinking Spatially the first chapter. Look at the bottom of the page and see Chapter 1 to 9 hypertexts which you can click to go into each chapter presentation. Today we will only do Chapter 1.
14. Click on Chapter 1. The same page will appear. Now press F11 to get a Full Screen View.
15. Look at the bottom left hand corner to see the Slide Projection icon. Press this to view each of the slide in automated slide mode. [Or, you can see the bottom center, Slide 1 of 17 and the left arrow, you can click the left arrow to read and view each slide at your own speed.
16. Click on the automated Slide Projection Mode and read each of the 17 Slides carefully, on your own. Note, a yellow bar prompt may appear at the top of the slide asking you to allow Blocked Content, say yes.
17. If you finish reading before automated Slide Change, press left button on the Mouse to proceed.
18. Repeat on your own: Chapter 1, 2, 3, and 5: on Thinking Spatially, You and Maps, GIS, and Remote Sensing., the processes of # 14 to # 17 above.
HANDS ON EXERCISE
19. Go to Gis for Beginners folder, and click on Exercise folder.
20. Click on Data folder.
21. Click on Kathmandu folder; you will see a list of files. Choose Details Display under View mode; Click on Type . You will see Exercise_1.aep, Exercise_2.aep, and Exercise_3.aep listed on the top.
22. Click on Exercise_1.aep. This will open up the ArcExplorer free GIS file with the first Exercise_1.aep name on top. Open up the window to full mode.
23. You will see a map of Kathmandu on the right window and a list of different attributes on the left pane such as TEMPLES , SCHOOLS TO FORESTS.
24. Take the cursor to the white empty square left of TEMPLES and click it. You will see the locations of Temples in the area as red triangles. If you click the white box again, the click sign will disappear and so will the temples locations on the map.
25. Repeat # 24 for each of the other attributes such SCHOOLS, HIGHWAYS, CITY ROADS one attribute at a time.
26. Repeat # 24 and #25 above with 2 or more attributes at a time to see how you can have multiple attributes displayed.
27. You can zoom in and out at your convenience
28. Repeat the same exercise from # 22 to # 27 for Exercise_2.aep and Exercise_3.aep in your free time at home or KUSOE lab.
29. Go to Data folder and click on Nepal folder. Repeat #21 to # 22. Click on Exercise_4.aep.
30. You will see a map of Nepal on the right window and country scale attributes on the left pane. Play with these country scale attributes just like you did with Kathmandu scale attributes in #23 to #28 above.
